Useful tips

There are a number of key features in preparing an image for fabric printing. Here are the most common errors committed by consumers that you can advise them about:

  • You can submit image by email up to 2 Megabytes in size in JPG format. This file size is more than sufficient to obtain very good results.

  • The first thing is to consider the enlargement. Our tote bags use a template of about 41 cms x 41 cms (small totes 30 x 30). While many modern digital cameras produce originals that are more or less that size, older prints require substantial enlargement and are not always appropriate.

  • Enlargement means that the computer software has to "guess" the colours to put into the new spaces and this often results in over-saturation.

  • The most difficult subjects are the "white" or "black" coats of small animals, which often become saturated with oranges and yellows (in the case of white) and blues and violets (in the case of black).

  • When scanning prints do not attempt to enlarge the image immediately, but rather concentrate on your colour density and brightness settings and set the scanner to 300 Dots Per Inch at least. This will ensure that there will be sufficient base information to make an enlargement possible.

Our rule is never to judge the aesthetic value of an image submitted by a customer.

Whatever the subject, it is likely to be dear to that person and it is not our role to be a "critic".

What we must do is to assist the customer in understanding how best that image can be used in fabric printing and to prepare the image for digital transfer.
